Stellenrust [New Agency]

Douwe Steyn was brought to South Africa as master stone mason to build and oversee the building of the Castle of Good Hope in 1663, in 1692 he purchased his own property consisting of over 1000 hectares and whilst this original vineyard has dwindled down to a mere 500 hectares in size, it has remained in the same family throughout this time.  In 1928, the first bottled wine was produced from the family’s estate, now renamed Stellenrust.

Under the enthuasism of two energetic wine aficionados from the family; one a doctor, one an accountant and a new 2,000 tonne winery, the winery has taken on a new emphasis in the last few years and this treasured piece of land is finally living up to its vast potential.

The Kleine Rust wines are everyday wines that have plenty of upfront fruits and can be enjoyed with or without food.   The semi-sweet white is ideal for those people who are new to wine and enjoy a touch of extra fruitiness to their wines.

Two grape varieties epitomises the essence of South African wines more so than any others; Chenin Blanc and Pinotage.  Chenin Blanc’s traditional home land may well be in the Loire Valley in France but people have come to recognise this magical grape variety as one of the true classics of South Africa.  Invariable dry in this part of the world, the wines range in style from light and crisp with green apple flavours that tingle in the mouth with their fine acidity to rich and full bodied wines that are as complex as any of the great wines in the world.

If Chenin Blanc can be said to have been adopted, Pinotage is very much the son of the South African wine industry. The wines that are produced here are rich and full bodied with complex dark fruits and spice with firm tannins.  These are wines that typically demand food.

Stellenrust Chenin Blanc AED 50

Clean and crisp Chenin Blanc with the nuances of green apple and a subtle note of apricot with beautiful acidity.

Stellenrust Pinotage AED 50

Rustic and earthy with dark plum fruits, a hint of spice and firm chewy tannins that are perfect with full flavoured red meats.

Stellenrust Premium Chenin Blanc AED 115

This is undoubtedly one of the best Chenin Blancs we have tasted this year.  The wine oozes quality, whether it is the complex flavours of ripe apples, quince and honey or the rich texture of the wine as it caresses the tongue, this is a great wine with great balance and acidity.  Slightly off-dry but never sweet and always very good.

Drink: 3-7 years      Food: Rocket and parmesan salad

Stellenrust Cornerstone Pinotage AED  115

Produced from low-yielding vines, this is a complex Pinotage with piquant cherry and perfumed notes.  The tannins are firm but elegant, the structure taught and fine.  A beautifully made Pinotage with all the hallmarks of a wine made with loving care.

Drink: 5-8 years      Food: Oak-smoked rib-eye steak
